Air quality alerts have been issued across 11 states in the U.S., including regions in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Southern California.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), areas such as New York City, Long Island, northern New Jersey, Philadelphia, and parts of Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Maine, Delaware, and Maryland are affected.
On the West Coast, Southern California, including Los Angeles and Orange Counties, is experiencing worsening air quality due to wildfire smoke.

Why It's Important?

The poor air quality poses significant health risks, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children, older adults, and individuals with pre-existing respiratory or cardiovascular conditions. Exposure to elevated ozone levels and fine particulate matter can lead to respiratory irritation, asthma attacks, and increased risk of hospitalizations. In Southern California, wildfire smoke contains fine particles that can penetrate deep into the lungs, further exacerbating health concerns. Urban areas with dense traffic and industrial emissions are particularly affected, with pollution levels reaching 'Unhealthy' or 'Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups' in some regions.
